March 14, 2021 News Digest OUR CAMPAIGN ISSUES IN THE NEWS Law & policy Independent legal review finds China in full breach of Genocide Convention The Chinese government faces fresh accusations of genocide against the Uyghur people following a damning legal report that found the Chinese government to have breached all five articles of the UN Genocide Convention. The report, published by an independent think tank this week, cited forced labor amongst other systemic torture and cruelty perpetrated by the Chinese state as evidence of genocide. Read more... Sign the petition Law & policy E.U. moves to hold companies accountable for human rights and environmental abuses On Wednesday, an overwhelming majority of Members of the European Parliament voted in favor of progressing with legislation that would hold businesses operating in the E.U. accountable for human rights and environmental abuses in their supply chains. This is a win for Freedom United and other campaigners who have been calling for stronger laws to root out forced labor in the public and private sectors' supply chains. Sign the petition Forced marriage Millions of underage girls at increased risk of being pressured into marriage A new report by UNICEF has found that the impact of COVID-19 may lead to a 10% increase on the 100 million children already at risk of being pressured into marriage over the next decade. A tailored post-pandemic response to child marriage is needed in order to build resilience to girls' vulnerability to coercion into marriages against their will. Read more...
