Does your Government support a global arms embargo against Burma?

Open letter to the Heads of the following governments:
Canada – Croatia - East Timor – Iceland – Mexico - New Zealand – Switzerland – Turkey - Ukraine

Your Excellency,

On 11 August 2009 the European Parliamentary Caucus on Burma (EPCB) strongly urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to use all its influence to secure the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners and impose a global arms embargo against the military regime. The EPCB further calls for a commission of inquiry into crimes against humanity being committed against ethnic minorities in Eastern Burma

On 22 May 2009 the UNSC issued its third statement calling on the regime to enter into genuine dialogue with Aung San Suu Kyi and ethnic groups. Instead the dictatorship is directly defying the United Nations by continuing to detain Aung San Suu Kyi, along with more than 2,100 political prisoners.

In Eastern Burma the military dictatorship is engaged in a military offensive against ethnic civilians. The United Nations has accused the dictatorship in Burma of breaking the Geneva Conventions by deliberately targeting civilians.

More than 3,300 villages have been destroyed. Last year alone 66,000 people were forced to flee their homes, and are now internally displaced or living in refugee camps in Thailand.

In September 2007 we also saw the brutal crackdown on Monks peacefully marching in Rangoon.

Despite the appalling human rights situation in the country, there is not even an arms embargo against Burma. The international community should not be arming a regime committing such horrific abuses.

The United States and European Union have now publicly called for a global arms embargo against Burma.

Your country has a long track record of supporting the people of Burma. Your support for successive resolutions on Burma at the United Nations General Assembly is greatly appreciated.

I would like to ask where your government stands on this issue. Does your government support a global arms embargo against Burma?

Thank you for taking the time to consider this issue.

Respectfully,

Wilhelm H. Ludwig
