Microsoft must meet human rights standards

From: Amnesty International Australia
Posted on July 3, 2008

China's online community pay a price for Microsoft's ventures in the Chinese market. Microsoft have blocked blogs with words such as 'democracy' and 'human rights', removed postings critical of the Chinese authorities, and signed a 'self-discipline pact' that discourages anonymous blogging and encourages self-censorship.

Microsoft has not released its revenue figures for 2007 but Fortune magazine estimates the company's profits from business in China exceeded US$700 million last year.

Microsoft's actions are at odds with the company's own core values, mission and ethics. In its 2003 Citizenship Report, Microsoft stated that "responsible corporate citizenship is defined by good behaviour, not good intentions".

TAKE ACTION

Microsoft must respect human rights

Call on Bill Gates, founder and Chairman, to end Microsoft's complicity with Chinese authorities in denying access to information.
