Parliament resolution against Beijing Olympics

By Ken Kato, Director of Human Rights in Asia
January 12, 2008

For your information, the European Parliament is preparing a tough resolution against China in next week's plenary session, condemning the continuous human rights violations and probably mentioning a possible boycott of the Beijing Olympics.

On 27th December last year, Chinese human rights activist Mr. Hu Jia was arrested at his home in Beijing allegedly in retaliation for his testimony o n 26th November at the European Parliament Human Rights Subcommittee.

The President of the European Parliament quickly appealed for Mr Hu's release on 31st December but it was rebuffed immediately by a Chinese Foreign M inistry spokeswoman infuriating the members of Parliament.

I have learnt that the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats (EPP-ED), the largest political group, is go ing to propose an urgent resolution which was mainly drafted by Edward McMillan-Scott MEP who is Vice-President of the European Parliament and leader of Boycott Beijing campaign.

I believe this would put strong pressure on China to rethink their violent crackdown against underground Christians, Tibetan Buddhists, dissidents, h uman rights activists and others who are considered subversives by the Communist Government. I am hoping that the Parliament could somehow use this o pportunity to help those innocent people who are spending another freezing winter in prison for their faith.
