THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING

An open letter to more than 100,000,000 people who will light candles for Tibet at home, with friends and in hundreds public vigils around the world
Candle For Tibet
August 13, 2008

In a few minutess our first candles will start shining in Dharamsala. Our flame will get brighter and brighter as the world turns, when millions and millions from over 150 countries will add their light to it. Our flame will be steady, warm and bright for 24 hours until the Olympic Games start.

What we are doing is nothing but great. We will effect change, and this is just the beginning.

Please stay tuned in the coming days to both our main action site, http://www.candle4tibet.org, and to our amazing social network http://candle4tibet.ning.com/ .

In the 24 hours preceding the games in Beijing, we will show the world that when individuals, regardless of their nationality, sex, religion race or politics, unite and focus their minds, awareness and actions on an issue, they are able to effect change.

There are many great people amongst us, who due to many reasons do not have high self esteem. They are creative, intelligent, resourceful and beautiful. But they sit at home and feel useless and insignificant.

We can change that.

There were countless emotional and moving moments for me in the past 4 month, but nothing made me feel so fulfilled more than an email I received this morning from one of our major activists. A person whose contribution to our campaign was nothing short of incredible.

Please allow me to quote her:

Dear David,

I just want to say best of luck with tomorrow. I can't believe the 7th is almost already here. All the plans are coming to fruition. I've really surprised myself with the things I've been able to do for this campaign. Thank you for giving me that chance and for believing me and trusting me with those tasks. It's really changed how I feel about myself and how I relate to the world. You really don't know what a wonderful opportunity this has been for me and how needed it was for me to find a community such as this one.

It is my life's dream to be able some day to make a difference with my photos and with my voice (which it has taken me many years to even begin to find) and to be able to make a living helping others some how. I feel that CFT has helped to show me that it's possible and that I do have some talents which can be put towards helping others.

This email might seem a bit... out of line and I apologize if you take it that way. One thing I've learned in my short life is to always tell those people who I appreciate and who I care about the truth.

I may have had a difficult life in the past and endure abuse and cruelty, but I feel as though I've completely stepped away from that past and instead of being controlled by it, I control it. I can use it to show just how much I understand things that happen in the world around me, and I don't have to hide it anymore. I don't have to be ashamed.

You taught me that. When I made that video--it was the biggest step forward I've made my whole life. I was amazed by your reaction and others reactions. I made something good, powerful, helpful...

I guess... I actually feel like a person, someone who's perhaps useful and able to make a difference.

I think that not only are we lighting candles for Tibetan freedom, but perhaps just as much for the freedom we've found on the journey getting here.

Love and thanks,

Qristina.

I strongly believe that there are many like our Qris in our world. It is clear that if we unite all this talent, heart and goodwill, we can change the world.

Love

David
