Aung San Suu Kyi – Myanmar (Former Burma) The hopes of so many on her shoulders

A Compaigning Bulletin from the Amnesty International
October 24, 2007

Today, October 24th, marks the anniversary of the detention of a true human rights heroine, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar.

Aung San Suu KyiMore than anyone, this Buddhist advocate of non-violent protest stands as a symbol of political resistance in Myanmar. Aung San Suu is the elected leader of Myanmar’s opposition National League for Democracy, but has been held in detention for 12 of the past 18 years. A mother of two, and the daughter of Aung San, who negotiated Burma's independence, she has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and has stood firmly in her convictions at great risk to her life. Her courage and integrity have inspired world leaders and individual citizens around the world to speak out for her freedom.Read more about her remarkable story.

Aung San Suu may be the best known of Myanmar’s prisoners of conscience but she is far from the only one, with 6 more prominent activists having been arrested just last week, in spite assurances made by the Myanmar government to the United Nations.

With the world having witnessed the military government’s disgraceful, violent crackdown on the revered Buddhist monks and other peaceful protesters, now is the time for all of us to speak out for the immediate and unconditional release of Aung San Suu Kyi and all of Myanmar’s longstanding prisoners of conscience. .
